Tuomas Rounakari is a Finnish violinist, composer, and ethnomusicologist known for trance state-driven solo performances blending violin, voice, stomping, and ankle bells. A former member of Korpiklaani (2012–2022), he also plays the traditional Khanty Ning-juh. His doctoral research explores altered states of consciousness through music, a theme central to his art. Drawing from Indigenous Siberian and Nordic traditions, his latest solo album Bear Awakener (2022) is a ceremonial journey rooted in ancestral bear songs. With over 30 albums spanning folk, metal, jazz, and avant-garde, Tuomas bridges myth, nature, and deep listening in his distinctive personal style.
“The difference with my childhood experiences is that I now can
consciously control the trance state. It is no longer something that
happens to me, but something that I do. With both, laments and shamanic
songs, I have discovered a deeper meaning of music and musicianship.
Music has a tremendous power to change us, to heal us, to re-organize
and transform us – to bring our body, mind and spirit to a full
alignment with who we really are!”
